woman of Kachua in Bagerhat went into hiding after the upazila chairman, Sheikh Mahfuzur Rahman, reportedly raped her, asked her to leave the country and threatened her not to seek justice.
Mahfuzur, also convener of the Kachua unit Awami League, is reported to have raped the woman in her house at night on December 19 at Charkati in the upazila. Her husband, who owns a pharmacy, was not at home at the time.
Local people alleged that Mahfuzur had threatened lives of her and her husband if they did not leave the country.
The woman, along with her husband and a minor son, went into hiding early December 21.
Muktijoddha Sangsad and Puja Udjapan Parishad of the district went on demonstrations, rallying for the removal of Mahfuzur as upazila chairman and his early arrest.
They will announced hunger strike for an indefinite period beginning on January 6 if their demands were not met by Saturday, commander Hajra Delwar Hossain of the district unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad and the district unit Puja Udjapan Parishad president, Milon Kumar Banerjee, said.
The superintendent of police, Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, said that he had directed the Kachua police officer-in-charge to take legal action after an investigation.
The police officer-in-charge, GG Biswas, on Friday told New Age that he had already been asked to take legal action after an investigation and file a case against the accused.
‘But I am yet to find the victim as she is reported to have gone into hiding after the upazila chairman threatened her life,’ he said.
Mahfuzur, however, brushed aside the allegation and said that it is a conspiracy to tarnish his political image.
Muktijoddha Sangsad on Friday brought out a procession demanding an immediate removal of Mahfuzur Rahman and his arrest.
